SCHOOL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

The ACT (Arbor Center for Teaching) School Leadership Program is an intensive series of seminars organized and conducted by Kit Abel Hawkins, founder of Arbor School of Arts & Sciences and ACT, designed to help participants identify the elements that must be considered and integrated in reinventing or creating schools of any kind.

Structured for the working professional, the seminars can take place during the summer or the school year. The beginning sessions serve as an introduction to the essential questions that must be posed in building an institution devoted to children's full development. Subsequent sessions assist educators in fleshing out the answers to these questions in the context of their own developing school ideas. On-going support beyond the first year is also available. Call to discuss session dates.

The ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS of SCHOOL LEADERSHIP

1 - MISSION, PHILOSOPHY, & ADMINISTRATION

Have we clearly articulated a mission and educational philosophy based on examined principles about the nature of the child and the purposes of schooling?  How can we better realize these principles in practice?

2 - FINANCES, FACILITIES, & BUREAUCRACIES

How should we plan for frugally deploying resources, building our campus, and navigating internal and external bureaucracies?

3 - CURRICULUM, ASSESSMENT, & PEDAGOGY

Have we developed a viable curriculum, an effective pedagogy, and methods of assessment consistent with our mission and philosophy?

4 - HIRING, STAFF DEVELOPMENT, & EVALUATION

How can we attract & retain remarkable teachers, grant them creative authority, and build a self-renewing culture of reflective practice?

5 - MARKETING, ADMISSIONS, & DEVELOPMENT

How do we find and recruit the right new families for our school, while deeply engaging current families and building a vibrant community?

Arbor School Leadership Series

Written by Kit Hawkins, Founder and Director of the Arbor School of Arts & Sciences, in Arbor's 25th year, The Idea of Arbor School is an "attempt to capture a real place and the truth of a school’s evolutionary process. [It is] an attempt to stand in contrast to all the negative press about schools and point to what has been done and might be done elsewhere."
